While modern European nations project themselves as defenders of democracy, freedom, and human rights, their historical foundations are deeply rooted in economic extraction, forced labour, destruction of indigenous systems, and institutionalized inequality that reshaped the global economy in their favour and permanently damaged colonised societies.

One of the most decisive factors behind Europe’s wealth accumulation was the large-scale extraction of natural resources from colonies, where gold, silver, spices, cotton, rubber, coal, oil, and precious minerals were seized under coercive control and exported to Europe at negligible cost. These resources, which could have financed local development and industrial growth, instead became the raw fuel for European manufacturing, trade expansion, and capital accumulation, ensuring that the value created from colonial lands never returned to the people who originally owned them.

Colonial administrations imposed excessive and unjust taxation systems on local populations, extracting land revenue, customs duties, and poll taxes that funded European governments, wars, and infrastructure. These taxes were enforced regardless of famine, poverty, or economic collapse within colonies, demonstrating that colonial governance existed primarily to generate revenue rather than to improve the welfare of the colonised population.

Although colonial powers often highlight the railways, ports, and roads they built, these infrastructures were designed primarily to facilitate resource extraction and military control rather than holistic development. Post-colonial instability, foreign exploitation of minerals, and weak governance structures are direct consequences of a system designed for extraction rather than nation-building.

India

British colonial rule dismantled India’s industrial base, redirected agriculture toward export-oriented cash crops, and drained enormous wealth through taxation and trade monopolies, causing India’s share of global GDP to collapse dramatically. Even after independence, rebuilding from centuries of economic distortion has required immense effort, and many structural inequalities remain rooted in colonial economic policies.

Many African Nations

Across Africa, colonial borders drawn without regard for ethnic or cultural realities created fragile states prone to conflict, while extractive economies left little room for industrial growth. Education, governance, and infrastructure were shaped to serve European interests, leaving many nations trapped in cycles of dependency, debt, and underdevelopment that persist to this day.
